The Tall Ships Races Kristiansand: an international start

July 25, 2015

IT WAS A TRULY INTERNATIONAL START to the third port of The Tall Ships Races Kristiansand, Norway today (Saturday 25 July).

The fleet of 80 vessels represented 19 flag states.  The vessel travelling the furthest to reach the port was Class A Young Endeavour from Australia, who joined the fleet for the first time. Also joining the fleet for the first time in the race series was Tarangini from India and Kruzenshtern from Russia, who had sailed from Kaliningrad to take part in this unique event.

Around 3000 crew from 30 different nationalities will be taking part in this stage of The Tall Ships Races and Kristiansand has prepared some special activities for them all to enjoy.

Arvid Grundekjon, Mayor of Kristiansand said, äóìWe have designed a unique and exciting programme to help everyone get the most out of what Kristiansand has to offer.  I hope that we will be remembered with pleasure by everyone and that everyone willl want to visit us again.äó

Trainees have the opportunity to enjoy sports activities including swimming jetties and a swimming centre, street basket and beach volley and a steeplechase.  Sightseeing activities include visits to an historical defence museum and leisure parks.  Visitors – in addition to visiting the Tall Ships fleet – will be treated to musical concerts of all genres, children’ activities and street entertainers.

Have a trainee experience

Visitors aged 15-25 years old have the opportunity to try out being a Tall Ship sailing trainee on board a Norwegian vessel.

Trainee activities will take place at 1300, Sunday 26 July on board Statsraad Lehmkuhl and 1230, Monday 27 July on board Sorlandet and Christian Radich and will include a tour of the ship and sample activities.  To book a place visit the ‘Sail on Board’ stand opposite Statsraad Lehmkuhl next to the Kilden Performing Arts Centre.

Take photos – win prizes

TRAINEES can post to #tsrselfie with selfies of their Tall Ships experience – at sea or in port.   Winners will be announced at the prize giving ceremonies in Kristiansand and Aalborg and Sail Training International has tablets and selfie sticks to give away.

NOTE:  It has to be a selfie.  If someone else has taken the photo it won’t be entered into the competition. Plus, if it’ a climbing shot harnesses must be warn and there must be three points of contact.  Safety first guys!
