Race Report 1: Racing Toward Sochi

September 20, 2016

Due to technical problems with the YB tracking system, a

full race report is not possible this morning. YB has been temporarily

suspended until the issue is corrected, hopefully later today.

Placings below are provisional and based on overall positions rather than in class, at 05:00 UTC.

  1. Akela (Russia)
  2. Adornate (Romania)
  3. Mir (Russia)
  4. Nadezhda (Russia)
  5. Viking (Russia)
  6. Pogoria (Poland)
  7. Kaliakra (Bulgaria)
  8. Royal Helena (Bulgaria)
  9. Super Good (Russia)

Here’s an update on the rest of the fleet:

  • Kruzenshtern (Russia) – presumed retired
  • Arial (Russia) – cruising not racing
  • Atyla (Vanuatu) – no report
  • Hispaniola (Russia) – did not start
  • Khersones (Russia) – retired

By

the time they reach Sochi, all crews will be very proficient in

tacking, as much will have been required during this race, especially in

the early stages.

Akela,

winner of Race One, is clearly hoping for a repeat placing in Race Two,

and as previously, will benefit from her size and weight in the

unfavourable winds. The larger, heavier ships with many more sails will

have been slowed in comparison, and their sailing masters will be using

all their knowledge and skills to make progress.

Most of the fleet are expected to arrive into Sochi early on Wednesday (21 September).
