Southerly Breeze Creates A Jolly Result

July 4, 2011

UK vessel, Jolie Brise has taken up the lead in Race One of The Tall Ships Races 2011 from Waterford, Ireland to Greenock, Scotland but the real duel is taking place in Class A.

Russian vessel Mir  is leading on the water with Wylde Swan from the Netherlands just two miles behind but Norwegian vessel Christian Radich is in first place on corrected time.  Both Mir and Christian Radich are previous winners of The Tall Ships Races and were both favourites of the enormous crowd visiting Waterford over the weekend.

Race Director, Paul Bishop, comments:  äóìThe wind has been optimum for Jolie Brise so far and she has taken the lead overall on corrected time. The captain, Toby Marris, has been in command of this famous pilot cutter since 1995 and is able to get the very best from her in these conditions. The next 12 hours will be very interesting and if the wind increases  from the south, the leading Class A ship, Christian Radich could benefit and  take the overall lead on corrected time lead from Jolie Brise. The captains and their young trainees will be having an exciting race at the moment.”

However, it is the Belgium vessel Tomidi, which is currently the leading vessel on the water, making over seven knots. If the winds continue to be favourable the first vessels should cross the finish line tomorrow morning.
